Not Every Old Wall Needs to Look New | EASYRENO DESIGN NOTES 02
During a recent stop at a café in Ipoh, one particular feature caught our attention — the old wall.
Peeling paint, exposed bricks, uneven textures and marks left behind over the years were all still visible.
Instead of covering everything up and making the wall look new again, the café chose to keep much of its original character.
And somehow, it worked.
The imperfections became part of the atmosphere.
They gave the café a sense of history, warmth and identity that would have been difficult to recreate with a brand-new finish.
DESIGN DEPENDS ON CONTEXT
Of course, this does not mean every old wall should be preserved.
What works well in a café or commercial space may not be suitable for a new condominium home.
Commercial spaces often have more freedom to use raw finishes, exposed materials and stronger visual character.
Residential spaces usually have different priorities — comfort, cleanliness, maintenance, practicality and the lifestyle of the people living there.
But the thinking behind the design can still be useful.
A good design idea does not always need to be copied literally.
Sometimes, what we learn from an old café wall can be translated into a home in a much subtler way:
• allowing natural materials to show more texture
• creating contrast between new and existing finishes
• keeping a meaningful furniture piece or object
• avoiding the need to make every surface look overly perfect
• understanding what already has value before deciding what to replace
LOOKING BEYOND CONDOMINIUMS
At Easyreno, our main focus is designing and renovating condominium homes in Penang.
But we believe good design thinking should not come only from looking at other condominiums.
We learn from cafés, hotels, old buildings, shophouses, streets and the way people experience different spaces.
The purpose is not to copy what we see.
It is to understand why something works, what feeling it creates, and whether that thinking can be translated into a different context.
Sometimes good design is about adding something new.
Sometimes, it is about understanding what is already there — and knowing what is worth keeping.

不是每一面旧墙，都需要变成新的
最近在怡保的一家咖啡馆停下来喝咖啡时，有一面墙让我们多看了几眼。
脱落的油漆、裸露的红砖、不规则的纹理，还有多年留下来的旧痕迹，都被保留了下来。
咖啡馆并没有把整面墙重新批灰、重新上漆，让它恢复成一面“全新的墙”。
相反，他们选择保留原本的状态。
而这些原本可能被认为是“不完美”的地方，反而成为了整个空间的一部分。
它让这个咖啡馆多了一点历史感、温度和属于自己的个性。
设计，要看应用场景
当然，这并不是说所有旧墙都应该被保留下来。
在咖啡馆或商业空间里适合的设计手法，不一定可以直接搬进一个新的公寓住宅。
商业空间通常可以接受更强烈的视觉效果，例如裸露材料、旧墙、粗犷表面和比较有个性的设计语言。
住宅空间考虑的却不一样。
舒适、清洁、维护、实用性，以及屋主真正的生活方式，都会影响最后的设计决定。
但这并不代表商业空间里的设计思维，对住宅没有价值。
一个好的设计概念，并不一定需要原封不动地复制。
有时候，我们从一面旧墙学到的东西，可以在住宅里用更细腻的方式表达：
• 让天然材料保留更多真实纹理
• 利用新旧材质之间的对比
• 保留一件有意义的旧家具或物件
• 不需要把每一个表面都处理得过度完美
• 在决定拆除或更换之前，先理解原本已经存在的价值
不只看公寓，也看更多不同的空间
Easyreno 目前主要专注于槟城的公寓设计与装修。
但我们相信，如果设计师只看其他公寓，学习的范围就会变得很有限。
咖啡馆、酒店、老建筑、店屋、街道，甚至人们怎样使用一个空间，都可以成为我们学习的来源。
我们不是为了照搬一个设计。
而是想理解：
为什么它在这里有效？
它创造了什么样的感受？
同样的思考，能不能换一种方式应用在另一个空间？
有时候，好的设计是加入新的东西。
有时候，则是先理解原本已经存在的东西，再判断什么值得保留。
